A Cape Malay classic — curried minced beef baked with a golden egg custard. Sweet, savory, and deeply comforting.
🧄 Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs ground beef
- 2 slices white bread, soaked in 1 cup milk
- 2 onions, chopped
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tsp curry powder
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 2 tbsp fruit chutney
- 1 tbsp apricot jam
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 2 eggs
- Salt & pepper to taste
- Bay leaves for garnish
👨🍳 Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Soak bread in milk, then squeeze and tear into pieces.
- Sauté onions in oil until soft. Add garlic and spices.
- Add beef and cook until browned. Stir in chutney, jam, lemon zest, and bread.
- Transfer to baking dish. Whisk eggs with reserved milk and pour over.
- Top with bay leaves. Bake for 45 minutes until golden and set.
💡 Tips
- Serve with yellow rice and sambal.
- Add raisins or almonds for extra texture.
